Amy Soong - Criminal Law - Qld

Graduating with honours in a dual degree of Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business from QUT, I further completed a Master of Laws and undertook the Bar Practice Course. I have been admitted as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia for over 16 years. Since admission, I have practised exclusively in criminal defence, representing clients in both State and Commonwealth matters. After spending six years at a large criminal law firm, I established Ashworth Lawyers in 2014 and have continued to focus on serious and complex criminal matters. I regularly appear in courts across Queensland and have travelled to represent clients in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. My experience includes acting in large-scale drug matters, transnational organised crime, sexual offences, high-value and complex fraud, and aviation offences. I also have significant experience in white-collar and regulatory crime, including Food Act prosecutions, tax offences and ASIC investigations. I have represented clients in CCC coercive hearings and coronial inquests. I am highly organised, with strong attention to detail, and I approach every matter strategically and thoroughly. I believe in exploring every option and preparing early and comprehensively to give clients the best chance of a successful outcome. I am also focused on resolving matters where possible through negotiation or mediation, to avoid unnecessary court proceedings and reduce the stress, time and cost involved for clients. I understand how foreign and stressful the criminal law process can be for many people, and I place great importance on working closely with clients and keeping them informed at every stage. I am always looking for new angles and legal arguments to support each case. My courtroom experience allows me to anticipate the likely approach of prosecutors and shape submissions that are persuasive and focused. I am a Fellow of The Australian and New Zealand College of Notaries and an active member of the Queensland Law Society Wellbeing Working Group, supporting the profession in promoting health and wellbeing across the legal community.
